Linux Market to Triple by 2012
Published: March 11, 2008
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Analyst firm Research and Markets has just put out a project on Linux-based server and client hardware sales, and is projecting that the market will more than triple between 2007 and 2012.

A market for a platform is not the same as an ecosystem for it, which is much larger in that it includes the cost of people and third-party software and services for the code that runs atop the platform. So the...

Ubuntu: OS of the Year?

By Scott Granneman

Today we have a technological cage match involving two operating systems, both UNIX- based, both mature, both with passionate detractors and even more passionate defenders, and both released just a week apart. I'm talking, of course, about Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), with its final release on October 18, and Apple' s Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, which was available for purchase on October 26.

The stereotype for each OS is well known: Mac OS X is elegant, easy-to-use,...

I had to lighten my load.
I gave away my linux box to a friend w/no computer.
I hope he has good luck w/it.
Perhaps in the future I will secure a new machine.
For now my linux days have ended.
I am now 100% AppleMac OSX

Freespire & Mapquest & Googlemaps

I've taken a job delivering flowers for a florist Co-op in Pittsburgh. Sometimes an address comes up that hasn't yet made it into the latest and most detailed mapbook available... Sometimes, if I'm in the office, and a spare computer is on... Google maps is just plain faster! ( My boss prefers mapquest, probably because of habit ). I thought I should try my version of Freespire out with both Mapquest and GoogleMaps.

I am glad to report that both these internet services work great...

New DSLinux Release

<img src=http://www.desktoplinux.com/files/misc/dsl-thm.jpg>

The project team of Damn Small Linux, one of the most lightweight Linux distributions available, released version 3.3 on April 4. The latest "DSL" features a 2.4.26 kernel, the Fluxbox window manager, and a rich set of applications, wrapped up tight in a 49.6 MB package.

The name says it all. DSL can fit into a credit-card CD or a low-capacity USB key drive and run well on a system as obsolete as a 16MB 486...

In a move that recalls the Vogons' decision to destroy Earth to clear the way for a highway bypass through space (a thankfully fictional premise of Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy), the judges comprising the Copyright Royalty Board have decided to destroy the Internet radio industry so the...

How the BBC is choosing MS DRM over open source...

The BBC has a long and glorious past as a technological innovator. Throughout the history of broadcasting, it has often been the first to develop and promote new technologies. Sadly, it seems now to be teetering on the brink of making technical choices that will not only damage its own reputation as a world-class institution, but which will also have serious knock-on consequences for free software.

As the worlds of computing and...
